A new head coach isn't the only big change for the Belleville West football team this season.
West, which used a triple option offense the past four years under former coach Ric Johns, is switching to a more balanced, pro-style attack under new coach Cameron Pettus.
"We'll be running and throwing the football both," said Pettus, who was an assistant on Johns' staff. "We moved some pieces around, so our quarterback last year, Deonte McCarvey, is now a tailback and a free safety. We have a junior, Shawn Cable, and a senior, Kyle Leadlove, competing for the starting quarterback job.
"The other kids are adapting to it real well. The offensive linemen have really grasped it."
Much of West's summer practice sessions revolved around the switch to the new system. As usual, that was built around a commitment to conditioning.
