The staging of the musical “Hands of the Spirit” is a huge task and the final production won’t be presented until December.

But audiences can not only get a sneak peek beginning Aug. 3, they can help provide feedback to help the musical’s organizers prepare the final version. The production tells how an illiterate African-American farm worker in rural Georgia rose to become an artist of international acclaim.

It is based on a book, “In The Hands of the Holy Spirit: The Visionary Work of J. B. Murray,” written by Mary Padgelek, who was named Georgia Author of the Year in the biography category in 2000.

There will be a small exhibition of African-American folk art in the theater along with a short presentation about Murray’s life, said Tom Coleman, director of the Savannah Community Theatre. The staged version will be presented in the Muse Arts Warehouse, while the full production will be staged at Trustees Theatre in December.
