Tunisian scientist Mounira Hmani-Aifa was awarded the UNESCO-L'Oréal Special Fellowship titled "In the Footsteps of Marie Curie" on March 29 at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris.
Created in 2011, the "In the Footsteps of Marie Curie" fellowship is awarded annually to a former recipient of the UNESCO-L'Oréal International Fellowship who has since demonstrated excellence and determination in the pursuit of her career in research. Hmani-Aifa received her first fellowship from L'Oréal 10 years ago.
Hmani-Aifa is a professor of human molecular genetics at the Faculty of Sciences in Sfax, and researcher at the Center of Biotechnology of Sfax. She was previously awarded the UNESCO-L'Oréal prize for female scientists in 2002.
The L'Oréal foundation's website reported that, thanks to her 2002 International Fellowship, Mounira joined the Faculty of Medical Sciences in Linköping, Sweden, doing postdoctoral research on genetic mutations related to asthma. Since returning to Tunisia, she has continued her research into genetic influences on health by studying hereditary deafness in the Tunisian population.
