An all-day conference examining native plants of Western Pennsylvania and sustainable gardening will be Nov. 5 at Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens.
The yearly event at the Oakland site will feature experts looking at plants, plant and wildlife ecology, the natural history of Pennsylvania, sustainable practices and landscape design.
It will feature Patrick Cullina, vice president of horticulture and park operations for an elevated park in New York City, who will look at how open spaces can be developed in urban settings.
Carol Mapes from the University of Pennsylvania will discuss the relationships between plants and insects, and Linda Johnson from Shadyside's Chatham University will speak on how native plants can make gardening more successful.
Landscape architect Sheila Brady will examine making good choices amid the diversity of plants.
