AMHERST - Revised rezoning for the North Amherst and Atkins Corners village centers and a proposal to create the town's first local historic district are likely to be the most contentious issues taken up by the annual Town Meeting next week.
They are among 30 matters voters will begin considering at 7:30 p.m. Monday in the Amherst Regional Middle School auditorium. Additional sessions are scheduled throughout May and June, if needed.
The town's $19.58 million budget, which includes money for reopening the War Memorial Pool as well as a three-year plan to plant 2,000 shade trees, is also on the agenda, along with discussion of national issues such as corporate financing of elections and the federal Secure Communities Act (See accompanying story).
Rezoning the two village centers to promote denser development using the so-called form-based code was defeated in the fall. Since then the Zoning Subcommittee has been revising the proposal.
