The six artists exhibiting in Fabled Fixations at Cumberland Gallery tackle similar subject matter: human folly and mythology stretching from our longest-told tales to episodes of modern life.
Their various takes on it all graphic and risqué interpretations ala R. Crumb to cutesy animé-like visions remain on view through May 24.
One cant help being reminded of the Frist Centers Fairy Tales, Monsters and the Genetic Imagination. In fact, one of the artists, Mark Hosford, also has work in that show.
Most of the art in Fabled Fixations contains layers of imagery and symbolism, either in striking black and white (Jesse Shaws wry linocuts and Tom Hucks bawdy woodcuts) or combinations of color (Fred Stonehouses collaged paintings).
In Kurt Kemps Doubting Thomas , Christs torso fills the canvas and is covered in corked bottles, crosses and lightning bolts. A hat-wearing man floating by on his back probes the torso as other men drift by in boats. Reds, yellows and teals are featured in the main image as well as a border of comic-book panels.
